Leach fired

Texas Tech has fired head coach Mike Leach, following allegations of mistreatment of a player.

This is far from the last of this situation, as Leach’s lawyer has vowed a fight for the head coach. A hearing was set for Wednesday morning for a temporary restraining order that would have allowed Leach to skirt the suspension Texas Tech had levied on Leach. But the school took the next step, firing Leach and making the hearing moot.

In February, Leach and the school agreed to a five-year, $12.7 million contract. According to terms of the deal, Leach was due an $800,000 bonus on Dec. 31 if he were still the head coach at Texas Tech.

The often eccentric, quirky head coach had been known for his unique style in ten years in Lubbock. But he was successful, posting winning records in each season and bowl games in all as well. Leach had never been accused of any wrongdoing, nor have any other individuals come forward since receiver Adam James made his claims.

Leach is the second Big-12 coach to be fired for “cause” this year, after Mark Mangino was fired at Kansas after numerous allegations of mistreatment of players.

Texas Tech will play Michigan State in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.
