Meyer to take indefinite leave

Florida head coach Urban Meyer announced today that he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Gators’ program.

Meyer, 45, is meeting with the media at Allstate Sugar Bowl, along with his athletics director and some players. He will take leave instead of a full resignation, as was announced yesterday.

The championship-winning head coach changed his mind over night, deciding to take the leave instead of resigning, but it is indefinite and AD Jeremy Foley has said his return is not predetermined.

“When it’s time, it’s time,” Foley said.

Meyer will coach in the Allstate Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati, but then offensive coordinator Steve Adazzio will take over the Gators and will coach until Meyer is ready to return.

During the press conference, Meyer was repeatedly asked about specific health issue, refusing to answer any of the questions. However, he gave an adamant “no” when asked if he had suffered a heart attack.

He did say that it would help if he could learn to delegate responsibility.

“I’ve lived a 30 year coaching career in nine years,” Meyer said. “I just need to be smarter. I am not very smart.”
